On the left, the world's most famously stylish twins , MK and Ashley Olsen, have produced one of the only good things that comes from Winter months... a cream, chunky knit, oversized, ridiculously comfy looking, fisherman sweater. The kind of jumper that makes you want to get out of bed in the morning, even if it is minus temperatures. Of course the price tag remains back in your bed and in your dreams, over $4,000. So instead, treat yourself to an option which a real fisherman is most likely to afford - the Topshop Cable Jumper by Boutique. It's a real 'catch' (sorry, couldn't resist).
If like myself, one of your insatiable vices resembles any leather clad, soft to the touch, tote/clutch/shopper/shoulder bag then read on... Since my graduation and most recent birthday I have been the forever grateful* owner of an Alexander Wang Emile Tote. In all its pebble textured, stone grey glory, it is (and will be for years to come because that's the beauty of designer handbags) the most exquisitely made and brilliantly versatile item in my possession. At full price the Emile is understandably one out-of-reach lady, ranging from £700-£800. However, if you have the patience and shopping skills, then she can be grabbed up at half the price from sites such as The Outnet, along with stacks of other too good to miss designer steals. We allllll know what the most sensible option here is. Whether you're saving up the pennies or in potential receipt of a very generous gift then full recommendation goes towards this winged tote. During my constant browsing I came across the version pictured below, taupe and croc-effect, currently available online for a satisfyingly discounted price. If you're serious about your handbags then this is the one for you.
*Thanks go to my equally handbag obsessed Mum, creative geniuses such as Mr Wang and Natalie Massanet for making it all possible (tongue in cheek much) <a href="http://www.bloglovin.com/blog/11898585/?claim=m23xdzjcb4t">Follow my blog with Bloglovin</a> Although it’s normally the fairer sex who are notorious for being fashion conscious, style savvy and retail addicts, recently many more men are giving us girls a run for our money in the looking good department. No one is denying that for as long as we can remember the big name designers and heads of fashion houses across the globe have been equally split between male and female. Names such as Sir Paul Smith, the late Alexander McQueen and Burberry’s Christopher Bailey come to mind immediately when musing over fashions biggest influencers to date and the number of male designers will only continue to increase. These extremely talented and intuitive gentlemen have encouraged men to take pride in the clothes they wear and embrace style and fashion as openly as their female counterparts tend to do so.
Along with talent behind the scenes, many more male celebrities are finding themselves in the spotlight, not only for recognition of their day jobs, but for appreciation of their impeccable style. It’s very common for magazines, blogs and fashion websites to feature the best dressed female celebrities of the week. Olivia Palermo, Miranda Kerr, Kate Bosworth are among a few names constantly quoted as ‘style icons’ and women all over the world try to imitate these beautiful ladies looks and take inspiration for their own wardrobe. However its seldom that you hear a guy saying to his friend ‘did you see that blazer Ryan Gosling was wearing on that show? I want to get one just like it.’ This doesn’t mean though that male style icons are few and far between, they’re popping up all over the place! And whether or not you guys are ready to admit it you will definitely be taking note of these fashion forward thinking gents. For me, a man in a well cut, tailored suit has the epitome of good taste. In the same way that every woman should own the perfect LBD, all men at some point will require the class and sophistication of the perfect suit. And who wears a suit better than Mr Tom Ford? What makes the designer and director so on trend (all the time) is pure commitment to what has become his signature style. Ford was quoted saying to Vogue ‘One of the most important things is to figure out what your look is – I don’t wear this black suit-white shirt combination all the time to try and be iconic – but because I’m most comfortable in this.’ Keep wearing those sharp suits Tom. In contrast to such a classic sort, is rapper/producer Pharrell Williams who embodies all that’s up-to date, on trend and seriously cool. His style icon status was confirmed in the recent spread for the one and only style Bible, Vogue. Whether he’s sporting red and black plaid trousers with a military style jacket, paired with Saint Laurent heavy duty boots, or a fitted white shirt, Louis Vuitton suit trousers and patent loafers, he pulls off both looks effortlessly and his creativity emanates through the clothes he wears. The fact the 40 year old doesn’t look a day over 25 also proves that men of any age can look stylish, relevant and confident. Last but by no means least, is the man’s man of male style icons and the second Tom in this list, Brit actor Tom Hardy. Apart from my secret fashion crush on the Sheepskin coat that Hardy’s film persona Bane, wears oh so well in the 2012 Batman, off screen Mr Hardy’s dress code is one that many guys can relate to; baseball cap, hoody, puffer jacket and trainers (not the smart kind either.) This casual combination proves unlikely to be heralded as trend setting or original, however saying this, it is the mans ability to scrub up extremely well that makes him pretty damn impressive. From scruffy Londoner to red carpet pro, the actor exhibits how simple it is for even the most laid-back of guys to pull it out the bag and really dress to impress. When the words ‘man’ and ‘repeller’ are put together the connotations created are not particularly alluring. Who would want to repel men and why? Some of you are probably puzzled and thinking that surely one of the primary objects of this game of life is to attract a man, pin him down, tie him up and live happily ever after etc etc. In regular terms this is all fine and well, however the blogging genius that is Leandra Medine has cemented the concept of Man Repeller* firmly into the fashion world. And in her game of life it’s all about pushing the man aside and gaining independence from the clothes you wear and however you so choose to wear them.
When I first came across The Man Repeller blog (TMR) I have to admit I wasn’t entirely sure of it’s intended ‘theme’. Most fashion blogs tend to follow a rather strict sequence; up and coming fashion trends, OOTD (outfit of the day that is, for anyone who has been living under an Instagram rock) or the ‘look at me in this exotic country wearing these exquisite (yet extremely unattainable) designer clothes’ set up. Eventually it is this uncertainty that draws you in and you realise that TMR is sharing with you, quite simply, her own unique style, along with the satisfaction that can come from wearing the clothes you love while not giving a damn about which trend you’re following or person (apart form yourself) you’re pleasing. The result is a woman whose outfits at times, are so anti fashionable that she becomes undeniably stylish. You’re left thinking ‘maybe I CAN wear that dress/hat/t-shirt with those trousers/loafers/gloves that I have in my wardrobe, even if they’re not gracing the pages of the current fashion monthly...’ This inspiration is coupled with quirky and intelligent writing that allows readers and followers to relate wholeheartedly to the stories and styles TMR is showcasing. Not only has Leandra Medine emerged as one of the top bloggers and a muse for style hunters and fashion writers alike, a recent footwear collaboration has confirmed her sought after status and her influence, especially within the digital fashion sphere. The Man Repeller x Superga creations are the ultimate casual shoe, stamped with Leandra’s personal style in the form of red, emerald or black velour or gold and silver shimmering, tweed high tops and flats. Take your pick. And check out the super cute man repelling promo video here. If you haven't yet read any of TMR’s recent stylistic ramblings and are in search of some materialistic insight, but not forgetting some mental stimulation, then this is the one and only expert man repeller you need to follow. * 'outfitting oneself in a sartorially offensive mode that may result in repelling members of the opposite sex. Such garments include but are not limited to harem pants, boyfriend jeans, overalls (see: human repelling), shoulder pads, full length jumpsuits, jewelry that resembles violent weaponry and clogs.' Being a student, I am always looking for bargains. Whether it's Groupon meal deals or 'One day only!' shopping offers, getting something for less is always a rewarding feat. And when it comes to clothes, there's nothing I love more than finding a high end lookalike at high street price. So get ready for it, because this is a good one...
J.W. Anderson is one of THE British designers of the moment and front row tickets for his highly anticipated London Fashion Week show are sure to be at the top of the fashion elites list. His new season A/W collection is all about classic cuts with a modern twist, creating effortlessly cool pieces that are versatile enough to wear on a day to day basis. However, (there's always a but when it comes to designer delights) the price tags are invariably that little bit out of our reach. Don't fret though this is the good bit, last week while I was searching out some new Lust-Haves i.e. online browsing, I came across the Gap Windowpane Pullover, which in all it's grid patterned entirety caught my eye immediately and I knew I had to pop it in my shopping basket. When it came in the post (the very next day may I add, amazing delivery from Gap) I was not disappointed... but this pleasure was multiplied by 10 when I realised I had actually purchased a J.W. Anderson copy cat. The £450 Checked Ribbed Neck Sweater is nothing short of the perfect Autumn jumper but for less than a tenth of the price the Gap high street alternative is the obvious choice. I’m not a matching underwear type of girl. When getting dressed in the morning it’s the last thing on my mind, if no one can see it then who cares (that kind of motto). Of course, I’ll consider the right knickers to wear in order to avoid VPL and would never allow my printed pants to be seen under a white dress, but thats usually as far as my thoughts, to what I’m wearing under my clothes, goes. What I do like however, is loungewear. I love the idea of lounging and the proposition that in your wardrobe there should be clothes set aside specifically for that venture. Comfortable, luxurious and uncomplicated clothes that although may not be seen by the outside world, allow you to chill out and at the same time feel oh so special. So, can my love for loungewear and nonchalance towards negligee be married? This is where & Other Stories and Claire Judge from Alöe both step in.
The Co-Lab collection for & Other Stories is designed by Claire Judge who believes that ‘Beautiful lingerie makes women feel special and gives women a feeling of sensuality and softness’. This mantra paired with the Swedish design teams chic and flirtatious vibe, has created a lingerie/loungewear collection that can’t be hidden. The silky playsuits, pretty pyjamas and coquettish under garments inspire you to shed your clothes ASAP, slip into something more comfortable and spend the day (or whole weekend...) in bed. The complimentary colours of the lingerie are ideal for mix and matching (music to my ears) and with soft lace, underwired and padded bra designs all us girls can find a style that suits. Alongside the undies, the cover-ups are what makes this capsule collection so desirable. Floaty tunic and shorts, in either cream or black, are to be slipped on with glimpses of your playful underwear peeking through and a personal favourite, the silky, floral romper, is a cute alternative to your regular nighty. If your underwear drawer is in need of a clear out, you’re bored with Primark pyjamas and need a bit of luxury for your lazy days or perhaps you’re looking for something alluring for a long weekend away with your loved one, have a peek at & Other Stories and the Claire Judge collaboration. Who knew, leaving so little to the imagination could be so tasteful. Photo Credit to stories.com As I’m writing this the heavens have ceremoniously opened up and you would not quite believe it was the month of August. This is the height of our British summer. Fair enough, we have had some exceptional weather the past few months but we’re always wary of those sporadic showers and temperamental temperatures that our wonderful climate can thrust upon us. In that case it’s not terribly ludicrous of me to be missing cosy clothes and water resistant footwear, is it? Some of you will be thinking right now it’s still summer! Why are we talking about the dull, drab seasons?! I don’t disagree, we should all make the most out of summer while it’s here, because who doesn’t love wearing denim cut offs, floaty dresses and strappy sandals? However, for those of you dreaming of comfy cashmere and lots of layers then here are some top picks from your favourite High Street haunts, which need to find their way into your A/W wardrobe asap...
The most practical piece for next season, as well as being a timeless classic has to be the leather jacket. I’ve had my current leather for four years now and couldn’t begin to count the number of times I’ve worn it, getting my money’s worth is an understatement. So it’s about time that I purchased a new investment piece. Zara have nailed this classic essential, in the form of their ‘Biker Jacket with Zips’. This jacket satisfies all leather jacket rules; 100% leather, biker style, textured sleeve and shoulder markings, finished with buckles and zips, it can literally be worn with every outfit from your everyday jeans to dolled up evening dress. Buy Now! The next A/W must-have combines three trends in one; feminine skirt, pink shades and tartan print. When I walked into Topshop the other week the ‘Checked Chiffon Midi Kilt’ was the first item that caught my eye and I still can’t get this tartan treat out of my head. Pink is the colour you need in your wardrobe next season and this pale shade is ideal for girly girls who can pair the midi skirt with ballet pumps and a pastel coloured cardigan, as well as pink novices who should toughen up the look with the Zara leather jacket, mentioned above. For on top, the colder months are considerably more bearable if you have a chunky knit sweater to add to your outfits. The ASOS collection has every colour, style and textured knit you could lust for and all at perfect prices. The ‘Aran Jumper’ in Berry is the ultimate Autumnal hue and ideal for layering over a crisp, white shirt or under an oversized winter Car Coat. Last but not least, no autumn/winter wardrobe is complete without the imperative pair of all weather boots. Whether its Biker, Brogue, Chelsea or Cut-Out, boots are the essential finishing touch to your outfit and can be styled to suit any occasion, casual or formal. As a girl can never have too many shoes (that’s a fact) there are two top picks to choose from. The new, middle of the road, high street store & Other Stories have created the classic ankle boot, with a twist. The open-back shoe complete with low heel and in either versatile ash brown or understated black, would suit thick tights and a structured skirt. The alternate high street haven, Topshop, have again been true to next season trends and the ‘Motel Monk Strap Boots’ are hot off the catwalk. Simple yet dapper, match these shoes with skinny jeans for an off duty look, and at under £50 for real leather these boots are an amazing steal! So, when September comes and you reluctantly need to swap the sunglasses for a scarf and flip flops for fur coat, make sure you pick up these A/W essentials. I’m off to purchase them now! To some people clothes are a mere burden. Why anyone would invest so much time and effort in something purely materialistic is beyond them, and as long as their modesty is preserved, the clothes they put on their backs need no more thought. At the other end of the spectrum, where my preferences lie, experimenting with your own style and appreciating that of others is a bonafide hobby... (at last we finally have an answer to the dreaded favourite past time question.) Despite differing opinions when it comes to material things, whether you’re interested in fashion or not, it can’t be denied that style is everywhere and why not make the most of it?
Social media and online blogging have accelerated our ability to see what people are loving and wearing, right now, on our screens. Personally, I’m a true product of this digital generation. I love nothing more than browsing Pinterest and Tumblr, checking out the outfits people have put together themselves, as well as new bits and bobs that could sneak their way into my personal collection. Some pieces you may not envisage yourself wearing exactly or accessorised in the same way, but that’s the fun of using these online channels as forms of inspiration. Take the recent pic of Nicole Richie out shopping in New York, put simply she looked ridiculously cool. Flattering, flared white shirt, leather trousers, flat brogues, bare-faced and finished with a neat chignon. It’s fair to say I probably won’t be investing in padded leather trousers any time soon (nowhere near NR on the coolness scale), but thats not to say I didn’t enjoy the look. I will be seeking out a similar shaped shirt and may substitute the leather for a softer textured trouser. Another lady that’s effortlessly chic is the reality TV star turned fashion aficionado, Olivia Palermo. There is not an outfit Palermo wears that I wouldn’t give my right arm for. Her understated style is faultless and completely transferable to your own wardrobe, as she's known to style herself and is extremely partial to High Street attire. No matter whose look you love, the type of clothes you can afford or where you take outfit inspiration from, style should be appreciated and enjoyed. Animal print could possibly be the longest standing fashion trend. Going way, way back our ancestors used the furs and skins of animals for practical purposes and historically Royalty and the upper class favoured exotic animal prints as a symbol of wealth. The emergence of this style for purely aesthetic pleasure was advocated by pin-up girls in the 1940’s, the overtly sexual Bettie Page favoured leopard print and images of her in barely there bikinis and off the shoulder slips in such prints exuded femininity, yet at the same time power and prowess. In more recent times it would be safe to say that clothes resembling cheetah or zebra print have been reserved for bad fancy dress outfits and stigmatised with thoughts of ‘nasty, trashy, sleazy, classless’ (better sang by the DC ladies). Next season however, the print of all prints is making a comeback and reinventing itself as the most versatile design in your wardrobe.
To whole heartedly embrace this new era of print, you have to discard typical associations of orangey brown leopard spots and brash black and white zig zags. Instead conjure up images of the lighter side of animal print. Cream and chestnut coloured deer hides, bright white and velvety black calf print, along with demure, sparsely spotted cheetah dots, make a chic statement without too much roar. If you’re an animal print virgin (like myself) start your collection off with an effortless giraffe print t-shirt or textured clutch bag. The adventurous creatures out there should take full inspiration via Ricardo Tisci for Givenchy and Carven, and dress head to toe in these delicate prints (images below). Autumn/Winter is the ideal time to come across your inner fauna. Even if it’s not cosy fur you’re wearing, our favourite print exudes warmness and paired with chunky knits in autumnal hues, you’ll be following the herd and picking up some prints. Victoria Beckham is like Marmite, you either love her or hate her, and although marmite is not the most flattering of comparisons, it’s undeniable that she’s been labelled as worse. I won’t lie, I was never her most admiring fan either. Posh was my least favourite Spice Girl and that duet with Dane Bowers was nothing short of appalling. However, it’s definitely fair to say that Victoria Beckham, having left behind her musical past, has instead found her true, talented calling.
Having established herself as one of today’s most sought after designers, as well as a woman who frequents Best Dressed Lists and can carry her daughter with ease across a busy Manhattan road in sky high stilettos, she is a woman who should be applauded. What also deserves our recognition is Mrs Beckhams newly launched A/W 2013 line. Victoria, Victoria Beckham is a lower priced (for some) addition to the VB fashion line and as the designer herself described at the catwalk presentation ‘the Victoria, Victoria Beckham girl this season is an engaged intellectual with a sense of humour…she drinks espresso, and she devours books and art and film. And she is subversively sexy without trying.’ If that’s the case, who wouldn’t want to be a VVB girl? Following the key trends for next season VVB is comprised of masculine and tailored pieces with easy to wear and subdued colour elements. For me, it’s the way VVB designs are uncomplicated and relaxed but at the same time the flattering fit and sleek lines instil a seductive and enticing confidence into any girl who wears them – take the Zip Front Collage Dress, for example. The lady herself has also intuitively tapped into the VVB girls brain and created garments that are suited to a fast paced lifestyle. The Sleeveless Tux Dress and Printed Silk Shirt/Skirt Combo are perfect examples of this; the look of a strategically planned, two-piece outfit but only minimum effort needed to choose one item from your wardrobe (something all girls will appreciate, thank you VB!) Overall, the new VVB line has all the key looks and is model inspiration for your up and coming A/W wardrobe. My only hope is that there’ll be a similar Victoria Beckham High Street collaboration within the near future! |
