When it comes to colour I’m not particularly adventurous, to say the least. I’ve never dyed my hair; I keep my make up palette to a minimum, and black, white and grey are my go-to shades when it comes to clothes. Don’t get me wrong, sunflower yellow sundresses and disco pants in an array of rainbow colours do catch my eye but as soon as I pick up the hanger that little thought ,‘It’s just not me’ always pops into my head. My aversion to vivid hues hasn’t gone unnoticed either. Once a good friend warned me against wearing a dress, which I thought was a relatively bright shade of black, because I might blend into the wall...
So it was very much to my own surprise, when I was catching up on the A/W 2013 Trends, that it was the most vibrant and striking of colours which were grabbing my attention. Dusty pink, deep fuchsia, candy coral; it was rose tinted love at first sight. Although my mother has told me millions of times, ‘pink is your colour!’ it’s a shade that very rarely enters my wardrobe. Nonetheless, I could picture straight away the John Rochas, pale pink, textured Car Coat and Carven’s bubblegum pink, oversized wool creation taking pride of place in my clothes collection.
Even though I doubt I’ll be reaching out for any other dazzling colours to team with this piece, (biker boots, black jeans and androgynous white shirt will do quite nicely), it will certainly add a breath of pink air to my attire and hopefully ease the transition from an ‘all white, all black everything’ wardrobe into a multi pigmented display (unlikely).
If you do decide to take on this trend, whether you go Olsen-esque and pair your boyfriend jeans and neutral pumps with the statement coat, or dress it up with costume jewellery and waist cinching belt à la Miroslava Duma, the Pink Coat will make every outfit a head-turner. Also, seeing as absolutely every woman needs an Autumn/Winter coat, this is one of next season’s trends that you can most definitely allow yourself to indulge in, be it designer or high street. Let’s all be Pink Ladies next season.
